Abstract

In this paper, we report a turn-on fluorescence based Fe3+ ion sensing by a phenylsulfonylindole. The compound acts as sensor for Fe3+ ions in a pool of several metal ions and shows better competitive binding in presence of other metal ions. The compound forms a 1:1 complex with Fe3+ ions with a binding constant of 388.41 M-1. Also, a 1:1 inclusion complex of the compound with β-cyclodextrin is prepared and studied using fluorescence and 2D ROESY spectroscopic techniques. The mode of binding of the compound with cyclodextrin is proposed. The inclusion complex does not sense Fe3+ ions and the reason is given.
