Analysis of Sugar Alcohols by HPLC-ELSD

Introduction
An evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) is a universal HPLC detector whose detection principle is based on the principal of light scattering . The scattering occurs when light is irradiated on to particles of residual non-volatile components after removing the volatile mobile phase using heat and nebulized with nitrogen gas. In the detection part, an LED is used as the light source and the scattered light is converted into an electrical signal by the photomultiplier to measure the intensity. Sugars and lipids and other non-volatile compounds, which have typically been measured using a refractive index detector or a short wavelength range of a UV detector, can be measured with greater ease using an ELSD.
In this report sugar alcohols were separated using a polymer NH2 column in HILIC mode and detected using an ELSD.

The chromatogram of a standard mixture of sugar alcohols is shown in figure 1.
